The Men’s Division 1 basketball season is

most often judged by who gets to play in the tournament and who wins the championship. In 2010, Duke’s Blue Devils, 35-5, won it all by topping Butler, 33-5, in a very exciting game. West Virginia, 31-7, and Michigan State, 28-9, earned their berths to the Final Four in spite of injuries to key players. Of the 64 bids to the tournament 32 went to schools from major conferences. Arkansas - Pine Bluff beat Winthrop for the final spot and the right play Duke in the first round. In the ACC Duke, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland, and Wake Forest received bids. In the Big Ten, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Purdue, and Wisconsin got invited to the Big Dance. Seven Big 12

teams including Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Texas, and Texas A&M got to show off their post season court skills. The Big East had Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Villanova, and West Virginia vying for the crown. Two Pac 10 schools, California and Washington, were asked to join the party. Four SEC

teams: Kentucky, Florida, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt, rounded out the teams from the big schools. Mid-majors who advanced past the first round included Butler, Xavier, Cornell, Saint Mary’s (CA), BYU, Northern Iowa, Old Dominion,

Murray State, New Mexico, Gonzaga, Ohio,

and San Diego State. Dayton won the NIT beating North Carolina. Virginia Commonwealth won the CBI title besting Saint Louis, and Missouri State took the CIT Championship over  Pacific. Great West Conference member and  New Jersey local NJIT improved to 10-21. Connecticut’s Lady Huskies, 39-0, defeated Stanford, 36-2, to win another Championship. Baylor, 27-10, and Oklahoma, 27-11, also

earned trips to the Women’s Final Four. Kentucky, 28-8, Xavier, 30-4, Florida State,

29-6, and Duke, 30-6, were Elite 8 teams.

What an awesome year for college hoops!
