The 2011 college basketball season had more than its share of twists and turns. At mid-season neither Connecticut or Butler were given much chance to reach the Final Four, let alone the Championship game. Connecticut, 32-9,

began its run to the crown winning the Big East Championship. Butler, 28-10, won 14 of its

last 15, including the Horizon League crown.

In the end, both teams had earned the

right to play for the NCAA Championship.

Kentucky, 29-8, and Virginia Commonwealth, 28-12, also advanced to the Final Four.

Of the 68 tournament bids, 36 went to schools from major conferences. From the ACC Duke, Clemson, Florida, and North Carolina received bids. In the Big Ten, Michigan State, Ohio State,

Penn State, Purdue, and Wisconsin got bids.

The Big 12 teams included Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Texas, and Texas A&M. The Big East also had Cincinnati, Georgetown, Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Villanova, West Virginia, Marquette, St. John's vying for the crown. Four Pac 10 schools, Arizona, UCLA, USC, and Washington, were asked to join the party. Four other SEC teams: Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt, rounded out the teams from the big schools.

Mid-majors who advanced to the Sweet 16 included BYU, Richmond, and San Diego State. Gonzaga, George Mason, Morehead State, and Temple made it to the round of 32. Wichita State turned back Alabama to win the NIT. The CIT tournament expanded to 24 teams. Santa Clara topped Iona for the Championship. Oregon

won the CBI Championship over Creighton.

The Texas A&M’s ladies, 33-5, won their first NCAA Championship defeating Notre Dame, 31-8. Connecticut, 36-2, and Stanford, 33-3,

also reached the Women’s Final Four. Baylor, 34-3, Duke, 32-4, Gonzaga, 31-5, and Tennessee, 34-3, were Elite 8 teams.

It was another great year for college hoops!
