The preseason polls had North Carolina 1, Kentucky 2, Ohio State 3, Connecticut 4,
Syracuse 5, Duke 6, Vanderbilt 7,
Florida 8, Louisville 9, and Pittsburgh 10.
When the dust settled in April Kentucky (38-2)
was number 1 and the NCAA Champion. Kansas (32-7), the NCAA runnerup, a preseason 13, vaulted into the second slot. Ohio State (31-8), made the big dance and finished 4rd. Louisville (30-10) who also got to the Final Four jumped to the 4th spot. Syracuse (34-3) stayed at five.
North Carolina (32-6) dropped to 6th.
Michigan State (29-8) joined the top 10 at
seven. Baylor (30-8) cracked the tup 10 in
position 8. Florida (26-11) held at 9.
Marquette (27-8) was a surprise at 10.
Of the 68 tournament bids, 32 went to schools from the major conferences. The ACC schools were: Duke, Florida State, North Carolina,
North Carolina State and Virginia. In the
Big Ten, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State,
Ohio State, Purdue, and Wisconsin got bids.
The Big 12 teams included Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, and Texas. Nine Big East schools received a bid: Cincinnati, Connecticut, Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette, Notre Dame, South Florida, Syracuse, and West Virginia. Two Pac 12 schools, California and Colorado got bids. The SEC invitees were: Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt.
Two Mid-Majors advanced to the Sweet 16: Ohio and Xavier. Norfolk State, Lehigh, Murray State, Creighton, New Mexico, Gonzaga, VCU, and
Saint Louis advanced to the Round of 32.
Stanford turned back Minnesota to win the NIT. The CIT tournament expanded from 24 to 32 teams. Mercer Clara topped Utah State for the Championship. Pittsburgh won the CBI Championship over Washington.
Baylor’s women go 40-0 and win the
Champion over a tough Notre Dame (35-4)
squad. Connecticut (33-5) and Stanford (35-2)
get to Final Four. Duke (27-7), Kentucky (28-7), Maryland (31-5), and Tennessee (27-9)
round out Elite 8 and an exciting tournament.
It was a terrific season of college hoops!
