The preseason polls had Indiana 1,
Louisville 2, Kentucky 3, NC State 4,
Ohio State 5, Kansas 6, Michigan 7, Baylor 8, Creighton 9, and Memphis 10. When the
games ended it was Louisville (35-5) who
would cut down the nets by besting
Michigan (31-8) in a very exciting
Championship game. Syracuse (30-10)
also made it to the Final Foul as did
Wichita State (30-9), this year’s Cinderella.
Other Top 10 Coaches Poll teams included:
#5 Duke (30-6), #6 Ohio State (29-8),
#7 Indiana (29-7, #8 Kansas (31-6),
#9 Florida (29-8), and #10 Miami (FL) (29-7).
Of the 68 NCAA tournament bids, 31 went to
schools from the major conferences. The
ACC schools were: Duke, Miami (FL),
North Carolina, and NC State. In the Big Ten, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State,
Minnesota, Ohio State, and Wisconsin
got bids. The Big 12 teams included Kansas,
Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State.
Big East schools who received bids were:
Cincinnati, Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse.
Five Pac 12 schools, Arizona, California,
Colorado, Oregon, and UCLA, got bids.
The SEC invitees were: Florida, Mississippi,
and Missouri. Two Mid-Majors reached
the Sweet 16: La Salle and Florida Gulf Coast.
Butler, Creighton, Gonzaga, Harvard, Memphis, San Diego State, Saint Louis, Temple,
and VCU advanced to the Round of 32.
Baylor topped Iowa to win the NIT crown.
East Carolina won the CIT beating Utah State. Santa Clara beat George Mason in a
3-game series to win the CBI Tournament.
Connecticut (35-4) won an 8th Womens Championship by routing Louisville (29-9).
California (32-4) and Notre Dame (35-2) were
the other Final Four teams. Tennessee (27-8),
Georgia (28-7), Kentucky (30-6), and Duke
made it to the Elite 8. This year’s women’s
teams also include 30-win teams Baylor (34-2), Stanford (33-3), and Delaware (32-4), who
were all eliminated in the round of Sweet 16.
