Villanova wins its 4th NCAA DI Championship defeating Michigan, 79-62. Preseason polls
had Duke #1, Michigan State #2, Kansas #3, Kentucky #4, Arizona #5, Villanova #6, Florida #7, Wichita State #8, North Carolina #9, and West Virginia #10. Villanova is #1 (36-4) in final Coaches Poll, Michigan #2 (33-8), Kansas,#3 (31-8), Duke #4 (29-8), Virginia #5 (31-3), Texas Tech #6 (27-10), Loyola-IL #7 (32-6), Xavier #8 (29-6), Purdue #9 (30-7), and Gonzaga #10 (32-5).
Major conferences received 40 of the 68 NCAA bids. American Conference teams were: Cincinnati, Houston, and Wichita State. ACC teams include: Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Miami (FL), NC State, North Carolina, Syracuse, Virginia, and Virginia Tech. Big Ten teams are: Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State. and Purdue. The Big 12 teams are: Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, and West Virginia. The Big East teams were: Butler, Creighton, Providence, Seton Hall, Villanova, and Xavier. The PAC-12 teams are: Arizona, Arizona State, and UCLA. The SEC teams were: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas A&M.
Seven mid-majors reached the round of 32
or better: Loyola-Chicago (f4/32-6),
Gonzaga (s16/32-5), Nevada (s16/29-8), Buffalo (r32/27-9), Marshall (r32/25-11), UMBC (r32/25-11), and Rhode Island (r32/26-8). In the NIT Championship Penn State (25-13) bested Utah (23-12), 82-66. Northern Colorado (25-12) won the CIT title by edging Illinois-Chicago (20-16), 76-71. North Texas (20-18) won the CBI title 2 games to 1 over San Francisco (22-17).
In total 136 men’s schools received a post season tournament bid. Notre Dame’s
women, #1, (35-3) beat Mississippi State,
#2 (37-2), 67-55, to win the Women’s Championship. The other Final Four
teams were Connecticut,#3 (36-1), and
Louisville, #4 (36-3), The women’s
Elite 8 teams were: Oregon, #5 (33-5),
South Carolina, #6 (29-7), UCLA, #7 (27-85),
and Oregon State #8 (26-8).
